The Minneapolis VA Health Care System is part of the VISN 23 Network
and is recruiting for a full-time Supervisory Police
Officer(Training) at the GS 8 level within the Police Service Line.
The
Minneapolis VA Health Care System (MVAHCS) is a teaching hospital
providing a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art
technology, as well as education and research. Comprehensive health care
is provided through primary care, tertiary care and long-term care in
areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and
rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended

Additional Duty Location Info:
1 vacancy - Minneapolis, MNThe position is that of a Supervisory Police Officer(Police Operations), appointed as a law enforcement official, authorized to carry firearms and make arrests. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: -Assists in planning, coordinating, and organizing of the twenty-four hour operation of the Medical Centers Police program;
-Prepares workload statistical reports, and makes recommendations to management to improve program;
-Performs law enforcement work in the preservation of the peace;
-Provides physical protection of patients, members, visitors, and/or employees;
-Protects government and personal property;
-Serves as primary Firearms Instructor/Armorer;
-Responsible for daily operations and monitoring of the Firearms Program at the Minneapolis VAHCS;
Work Schedule: 8am-4:30pm;subject to change based on the needs of the agency

Qualifications Required:
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement Monday, December 09, 2013.
Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and
have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade
requirements.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
GS 8: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS- 07)
in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the
organization. Qualifying specialized experience is experience that
provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law
enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved
responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property.
Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a
police force; through service as a military police officer; in work
providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or
other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing
criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the
required knowledge and skills.
NOTE:
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually
spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit
for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and
responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent
in such employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS: The Supervisory Police Officer must annually undergo and pass a physical for police officers in accordance with the VA Handbook 0730. The Supervisory Police Officer must possess emotional and mental stablitliy. Physical demands include moderate to arduous physical exertion, the ablity to run, climb multiple stairs, and lift disabled or injured individuals. The work requires frequent recurring surveillance in which theres is a considerable amount of walking(up to 8hrs), standing(up to 8hrs), bending(up to 5 hours), climbing w/use of both legs and arms(up to 5hrs), crawling(up to 5hrs). Also a requirement of heavy lifting/carrying of 15lbs and over, straight pulling, pushing, pulling hand over hand, use of fingers, requirement of both hands and legs, operation of motor vehicle, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability and desirablity in the use of a firearm, near vision(correctable), far vision(correctable), requirement of both eyes, depth perception, ability to distinguish colors and shades of colors, hearing(aid permitted). Enviromental factors include working outside and inside in excessive heat, cold and humidity, also working in fumes, smokes, or gases, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, and working around moivng objects or vehicles. Also the Supervisory Police Officer will work alone and may work protracted or irregular hours of work. The Supervisory Police Officer will also intervene in assaults, criminal acts and disturbances.

KSA 5 - Ability to communicate with a variety of persons in a wide range of situations
