This position is located in the Police & Security Service at, Northport Medical Center, in Northport NY. This position is open to all permanent empolyees of Northport VA Medical Center only. With

DUTIES

1 vacancy - Northport, NYThe incumbent will serve as a Telecommunications Technician for the Northport Medical Center managing a wide variety of calls. The incumbent must be available to work on rotating shifts to provide 24 hour coverage, 7 days a week. He/She will be responsible for operating a UA 5200 console located within telecommunications section of the Police Service. The incumbent will handle calls locally, long distance, overseas and numerous emergency calls, i.e. bomb threat, crisis intervention, threatened suicide etc. Operates switchboard console, hospital intercom, overhead page, radio linkage with Police/Fire protection/Ambulance personnel.
The Telecommunications Technician operates the emergency telephone and radio systems and dispatch necessary personnel to handle criminal incidents, emergency situations and routine services. It is essential to posses the knowledge and skills necessary to disperse callers rapidly and professionally to the proper party of service within the Medical Center and two national cemeteries.
He/She will be responsible for monitoring, testing and recording the results of the pager tests, consolidated facility alarms, audio logger, multi-facility closed circuit surveillance televison and emergency radio system.The incumbent must be able to use good judgment when working alone under stress.
Work Schedule: Must be able to work on rotating shifts to provide 24 hour coverage, 7 days a week.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EVALUATIONS
Qualifications Required:
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcementTime-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
GS-5
Applicants must have held the GS-4 grade of higher for 52 weeks in order to meet the requirement for the GS-5
Specialized Experience:
Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:Knowledge of and ability to operate multi-line electronic console; Ability to operate radio and paging equipment, office fax and computer, Ability to communicate orally and respond effectively and professionally to adverse population via telephone and/or personal contact; Ability to work under stressful conditions including reporting emergency situations; Ability to read and interpret rules, regulations and policies pertaining to telecommunication activities; Ability to maintain confidentiality and safeguard sensitive information.
OR
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level. You must have a combination of 4-year course above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 60 semesters hours of course study related to occupation is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level.

Physical Requirements: The position requires long periods of sitting at the switch telecommunication center during heavy call periods until relieved. The incumbent must be physically capable of activating and visually monitoring numerous critical alarms, computers, and radio equipment in the telecommunication suite. The incumbent must be capable of performing clerical duties and clearly communicating emergency situations to the necessary staff.
