The Pharmacy Technician (Controlled Substance) is located with the Pharmacy Service at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center is a specialized position established to increase the utilization of the pharmacy technician to perform technical duties handling controlled substances.  The duties of the controlled substance technician are at the highest level in significance of scope, complexity (difficulty), range of variety, accuracy and are performed 100% of the time.  Assignments consist of standardized duties involving several sequential steps, processes and methods to perform a variety of pharmaceutical support tasks.   The work involves selecting the applicable series of steps from several alternatives in each of several different assignment areas.  Assignment involve the preparation/review/dispensing/control of medication/other pharmaceutical product to patients on inpatient and outpatients treatment units.  (The work product directly affects the health of inpatients and outpatients.  The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged period of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 44 lbs., pushing and pulling of large medication carts, and bending/stooping.)  The incumbent is responsible for assuring facility compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, directives, policies and procedures applying to the dispensing, storage, transfer, inventory and accountability of controlled substances.  This position requires significant independent decision making with moderate supervision.  The areas of responsibility include: Controlled Substances Pharmacy Vault, Outpatient Pharmacy & Inpatient Pharmacy (as assigned), Inpatient Units and Clinics, and Automated Dispensing Equipment (MedSelect).  

Tour of duty for this position is an 8 hour tour, Monday-Friday. 
Hours are as follows;
7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
However, hours may be extended to include possible evenings and Saturdays.

Tour may vary as deemed necessary to meet the needs of the Veterans and the Medical Center.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:  Grade, step, and salary is recommended by the Pharmacy Technician Professional Standards Board and approved by the Medical Center Director.   Full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7.

Relocation expenses are not authorized.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EVALUATIONS

Qualifications Required:

Basic Requirement:  Must be certified by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
Physical Requirements:  The work for this position requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 44 pounds, pushing and pulling of large medication carts, and bending/stooping.  



Education or Experience.  A 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; or Successfully completion of at least one (1) year of pertinent specialized training course in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces; or at least one (1) year of specialized experience as a pharmacy technician at the GS-5 level.

In addition to the requirements listed above, a well qualified candidate will meet the following competencis and provide examples during a performanced based interview.
  • Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
  • Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. 
  • Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. 
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
  • Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
