DUTIES

Additional Duty Location Info:

1 vacancy - Battle Creek, MI United States
This is a permanent, full time, position located in the Structural Maintenance Section in Facilities Management Service.  The Mason maintains, repairs, alters and constructs exterior and interior surfaces of structures.  This is done by using a wide variety of building products.  Work is done form oral instructions, blueprint, work order or rough sketch.  Work is planned, laid out, proper tools and material selected and used.  Work is accomplished in accordance with appropriate methods and accepted trade practices.  The Mason lays common and face brick, firebrick, cinder and cement block, terra cotta, and various artificial and natural stone.  The incumbent exercises skill in constructing and repairing walls, walks, chimneys, fireplaces, manholes, boilers and all other types of masonry structures.  
The Mason possesses a thorough knowledge of the masonry trade in planning work and determining methods and techniques that are to be utilized.  Is highly skilled in cutting and shaping all kinds of masonry products as well as repairing all types of penetrations through and corners on all types of masonry products.  In addition to laying brick and block in straight horizontal rows, the Mason must also be able to perform a variety of more complex work, such as circular masonry structures.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. schedule may change to meet the needs of the Veterans and the Medical Center.  Call-back emergency and overtime are regular requirements of this position.  Work may include assignment to second, third, or rotating shifts.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EVALUATIONS

Qualifications Required:

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c ). 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over, heavy carrying, 45 pounds and over, strait pulling up to an hour, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hand required, walking and standing for up to 6 hours, crawling and kneeling for up to 1 hour, repeated bending, climbing, use of legs and arms, both legs required, operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable to 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid permitted), must be mental and emotional stable.  
PHYSICAL EFFORT The incumbent is continually standing, walking, bending, and climbing to accomplish the assigned work. Frequent heavy lifting is required. Occasionally, up to 100 pounds of building material may be lifted. Effort is also exerted in setting up and using scaffolds, ladders, and other items. 
WORKING CONDITIONS You will be working outside and inside, around dust, silica, asbestos, etc., fumes, smoke, or gases, solvents (degreasing agents) grease and oils, electrical, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working on ladders or scaffolding, work closely with others or alone.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:  Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.  Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.  The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions.  The screen-out element for this position is Ability to do the job of a Mason without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS:  Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:
  1. Ability to do the job of a Mason without more than normal supervision. (Screen out)
  2. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).
  3. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  4. Knowledge of materials.
