The Strategic Lead, Rheumatology Therapeutic Area Stronghold (RTAS) will report to the VP, Medical Group and serve on the Medical Group Leadership Team. This position will be responsible for both direct reports and for building a matrixed team capable of determining an ongoing scientific strategy and business plan for Medical Affairs within the disease area. The strategy will aim to sustain Medical Affairs and commercial leadership in this therapeutic area by identifying and addressing key stakeholders’ knowledge gaps through data dissemination, data generation and education. The RTAS lead will lead the evaluation of commercial and Medical Affairs capabilities and gaps, and will address these gaps through a Medical Affairs data dissemination/communication plan and data generation activities. The RTAS will lead this therapeutic area in business planning. This position will be responsible for all Medical Group home office and field -based personnel in this therapeutic area, including the supervision of clinical trials and registries.

Leadership of the RTAS requires: a recognized expert with detailed understanding of the pathophysiology underlying the immune mediated disease, a detailed understanding of the commercial landscape and the R&D DAS strategy, experience with execution of clinical trials and/or registries, an ability to cross-collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and an extensive network with KOLs and scientific leaders. The RTAS lead will drive the execution of the RTAS strategy through collaboration with functional areas (including R&D and Commercial) and will ensure the RTAS strategy is aligned across Janssen Medical Affairs and with the overall JBI, Immunology TA and Janssen 2020 strategies.

Essential functions include: Leads the RTAS team in developing a scientifically and commercially sound strategy for building the leading global pipeline of early and late stage assets; Ensures the RTAS Team has representatives from the necessary functions for the RTAS to operate effectively; The RTAS leader and functional leaders will share joint accountability for objective setting and performance evaluations of RTAS team members; Serves as a core member of Medical Group Leadership team; In concert with the RTAS team will be responsible for strategic direction, management and prioritization of cross Medical Affairs efforts, and non-project budget decisions within boundaries allocated by the Medical Group Leadership Team; Identify, prioritize and oversee the implementation of innovative data dissemination approaches and data generation strategies while integrating the changes healthcare environment. This will require close working relationships with the functional leaders of Immunology Commercial, HECOR, Strategic Customer Group, Biomarkers, and Clinical Development; Actively contributes as a disease-specific expert, and provide advice and input to the Immunology DAS, Commercial, HECOR and Medical Information; Creates opportunities for key talent within the company to assume leadership roles; and Supervises the planning and execution of clinical trials and registries.

Qualifications


This position requires a MD, PhD or MD/PhD in an Immunology related discipline with at least 10 years of experience and a record of accomplishments in disease specific clinical research, and/or clinical education. S/he must be externally recognized as a leader in the disease area. The successful candidate must have strong leadership skills with highly collaborative instincts. Clinical trial experience is required. The candidate must have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with basic and Clinical Scientists, including Biologists, Pharmacologists, as well as with regulatory, clinical and commercial colleagues. The candidate must have strong collaboration and teaming skills. Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills are required. The position may require up to 10% annual travel (domestic and international).
