Job Summary:
The Optical Systems Division (OSD) Laboratory is looking for a Materials Scientist/Engineer to participate in or lead cross-functional product development and commercialization efforts on its portfolio of optical display films in the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) market. This position offers the opportunity to contribute in one of 3M's most dynamic businesses.
We are looking for a self-directed and energetic candidate who is strongly interested in new material development for use in new products and markets. The candidate will be responsible for measurement and testing of product development samples. The candidate will work closely with global commercialization teams to translate customer needs into new product technical requirements and participate in global teams to bring new products to market. Excellent communication skills are a must since this position will include hands-on work with cross-functional teams, including global laboratory, business/marketing, quality, and manufacturing functions.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Research new materials, develop product prototypes and evaluate performance.
- Lead analysis to support product concept down-selection and feasibility assessments.
- Formulation development of themoset chemistries, including two-part urethanes and epoxies, as well as photopolymerizations.
- Qualification of selected chemistries through manufacturing operations.
- Analytical test method development.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited university
- Minimum of 3+ years process and/or product development experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelors or higher in Chemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Engineering or Polymer Science from an accredited university
- 3M experience working across multiple disciplines, businesses and/or departments
- Experience working with cross-functional teams
- Theromoset chemistry development
- Experience developing and commercializing new products
- Excellent team skills and ability to work across all levels within the organization, from process line operators to senior level scientists
- Experience in one or more of the following areas:
Web-based processing
Epoxy and urethane adhesives
Photopolymerization
Coatings
- Strong leadership and team building skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Location: Maplewood, Minnesota
Travel: May include up to 10%
Relocation: Is authorized
