The Position

The Head ofPatent Licensing and Business Strategy will be responsible for patent licensingtransactions and business strategy analyses performed by our team of in-housepatent professionals and outside counsel. The position, based in South SanFrancisco, will report directly to the Vice President -IntellectualProperty. 
JOBRESPONSIBILITIES:
Patent licensingtransactions encompass negotiations with third parties, drafting of term sheets,material transfer agreements, licensing agreements, and other types of agreements,and providing counsel on associated legal issues to internal businessclients.  An important part of this rolewill be to assure coordination of work between the Patent Law group and othergroups within the company that are involved in technology licensingtransactions, such as the Transactional Law group, Partnering, and AllianceManagement.  Business strategy analyses involveidentifying and assessing any third-party patents and published patentapplications that may be relevant to the company’s business.  The person in this role will be responsiblefor assuring that current best practices are applied to such analyses, includingestablishing consistent policies and processes for performing the analyses,reviewing the results of the analyses, and assuring that the results and any associatedbusiness implications and strategies are clearly and timely communicated toproject teams, management committees, or other internal clients.
Keymeasures of success in this role include the ability to manage the work ofothers within these areas of functional responsibility, to motivate and mentorthe patent professionals performing the work, to assure that work product is consistentlyof the highest quality, to be a good collaborator with others in the GenentechLegal Department and internal business clients, and to influence good businessdecision making by assuring that decision makers are thoughtfully informedabout patent licensing and business strategy matters.

Who You Are

Advanceddegree in a relevant scientific field is required, with a Ph.D. degreepreferred.  J.D. degree, license topractice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and admitted to theCalifornia State Bar or eligible to become California Registered In-HouseCounsel.  Minimum twelve years of experienceas a practicing patent attorney in a law firm and/or in-house legal department,predominantly involving chemical, biotechnology, and/or pharmaceuticalpatents.  Demonstrated ability to leadprojects and multidisciplinary teams.  Excellentwritten and verbal communications skills, attention to detail, and customer-serviceorientation.  Excellent presentationskills, including demonstrated ability to convey complex ideas clearly.  Some business travel required.
