Duties:

The Psychologist functions as an active member of an interdependent, interdisciplinary Pain Clinic team consisting of providers within various disciplines including medicine, psychology, pharmacy, physical therapy and physiatry.    The incumbent will perform in the role of Telehealth Pain Psychologist to provide care to Veterans within the Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) and to Pain Clinic patients across VISN 5. The incumbent will also provide treatment to Veterans referred to the Pain Clinic at the DC VA Medical Center, and will work towards the development of our local pain program into an accredited Chronic Pain Rehabilitation facility and tertiary pain treatment center dedicated to treatment, education and research. The Chronic Pain Clinic employs an interdisciplinary, multi-modal approach to pain management that is based on the biopsychosocial model of chronic pain and emphasizes optimal pain control, improved function, and quality of life. The incumbent will provide a combination of specialized assessments and treatment services utilizing telehealth technology, as well as through face-to-face contact. These services include psychotherapy, behavioral health education, biofeedback, and crisis intervention, using evidence based interventions. The incumbent will be proficient in psychological approaches to pain management and will be proficient in assessing and treating patients with common co-morbidities including substance use disorders, traumatic brain injuries; multiple medical problems; PTSD, sleep disorders, and depression.  The incumbent will be proficient in behavioral management of adherence issues. The incumbent will work to help patients both manage pain and enhance functional and effective participation in their social, vocational, and learning communities despite ongoing pain. The incumbent will be familiar with evidence based treatment approaches (including CBT, Motivational Interviewing, biofeedback, and Mindfulness approaches) and a variety of treatment modalities including: individual therapy, group therapy, family and couples therapy and psycho-education.  The incumbent should be proficient in both design and implementation of treatment interventions as well as consulting with other Pain Clinic team members and other colleagues throughout the Medical Center
