We’re currently seeking qualified candidates to join our team in the position of:

Associate Director Bioinformatics

Position Summary:
As manager and individual contributor lead research and development (R&D) of cutting-edge bioinformatic pipelines of next-generation sequencing (NGS) products in support of the organization’s strategy, goals and objectives. Directs statistical and bioinformatic aspects of research studies and product development across multiple projects. Lead bioinformatic activities in a rigorous technical development process for (functional) genomics platforms, including NGS platforms in accordance with CLIA and FDA requirements. Stay abreast of new bioinformatic developments, and develop innovative tools, or evaluate and customize existing software applications as required. Maintain expertise in the science and application of genomic technologies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilties
Build and support cutting-edge pipelines and databases for the bioinformatic analysis, annotation, reporting and meta-analysis of (functional) genomics, including NGS data.

Design primer and capture oligonucleotide sets for sequencing of large gene panels.

Design experiments, analyze large-scale genomic (mutation, copy number, expression, epigenetic) datasets acquired internally and in collaboration with academic and clinical research partners, and verify and document results.

Identify and troubleshoot problems that may adversely affect test performance/results and either correct or escalate as needed to upper member for guidance/assistance.

Work in conjunction with internal departments and serve as consultant to provide scientific expertise on project execution and design.

Additional duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Manage operationally and functionally, and supervise bioinformaticians on the team (as assigned) including setting of objectives, performance management and professional development of associates.
Train new staff on technical and operational procedures. Serve as a bioinformatic expert for other departmental staff.

Ensure adherence to company policy on patient and client confidentiality and timeliness and accuracy of completion, quality of results and efficient use of resources.

Manage assigned projects and timelines; establish, execute, and monitor project plan, including deadlines. Oversee work of project staff as assigned. Develop and monitor work schedules; ensure timeliness and quality of work.
Qualifications
Proven expertise in analysis methods for NGS data, the application of open-source tools such as BWA, GATK, Pindel, Delly, ANNOVAR; and development of pipelines and databases for the bioinformatic analysis and reporting of NGS data.

Knowledge of statistical and bioinformatic software packages (e.g. R, Bioconductor) or similar data analysis software, and of bioinformatics tools and databases such as the NCBI and IGV Genome Browser, BLAST, Primer3 is required.

Knowledge of statistical and bioinformatic software packages (e.g. R, Bioconductor) or similar data analysis software is required.

Proficiency in developing applications in a high-level (e.g. Java) and a scripting (e.g. Perl, Python, Ruby) programming languages to accomplish bioinformatic tasks is desirable.

Experience developing database applications leveraging relational databases such as SQL Server, Oracle or MySQL is desirable.

Experience in image analysis and staining, fluorescence and high throughput image acquisition is desirable.

Meticulous attention to detail, proficient reasoning and problem-solving skills in experimental design (e.g. DFSS, DoE, RSM), data analysis, verification and interpretation. Proficiency in common uni/multi-variate statistical and data mining techniques used in analyzing molecular and clinical data is desirable.

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of, and ability to apply principles, concepts, practices and standards of assay development and analytical methods validation and sample testing in a CLIA laboratory setting.

Education and Experience
Degree in Bioinformatics or related scientific discipline. Commercial research and development experience in diagnostics preferred.
o Masters plus 15 years of relevant experience.
o PhD plus ten (10) years of relevant experience, which may include post-doctoral experience, and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in industry setting.
o Minimum of four (4) years direct supervisory/team leader role.
