Description
This position will serve as a key legal advisor to the Global Network Business unit (“GNB”) and provide legal, strategic, and transactional guidance on a wide array of commercial transactions and engagements with a particular focus on payment processing in the digital and mobile payments space. It will support GNB’s investment and partnership relationships in the dynamic, innovative and evolving areas of emerging payments, digital landscape and data management. It will also involve interfacing with international counsel and collaborating with internal business clients and other stakeholders across the enterprise. The position will report to a Vice President & Senior Counsel in the Global Network & Merchant Services practice group of the General Counsel’s Office (“GCO”) of American Express.

Essential Job Functions:
- Provide legal advice and strategic and transactional support for the GNB businesses on a wide range of issues with respect to development of payment processing capabilities and new digital and mobile products; merchant sales negotiations; strategic alliances in the digital space; and management of template agreements in both the offline and online spaces and emerging initiatives.
- Provide legal advice in support of GNB’s investments in technical consortia, with focus on transactional support, bank regulatory monitoring and compliance, and corporate governance matters.
- Coordinate with international GCO, business development leads, and cross-functional teams to ensure all legal issues are identified, evaluated, and managed across the organization. Manage negotiations of complex agreements in emerging legal and business areas. Serve as a reference and thought leader for the global GCO teams supporting the roll-out of GNB initiatives in international markets.
- Support the identification and implementation of process improvements within the GNB organization.
- Support the development and management of policies and procedures regarding contracts and commercial relationships, including collaboration with and support for the Compliance organization as it relates to GNB initiatives.

Qualifications
- Strong transactional background with experience drafting and negotiating contracts and a variety of complex commercial agreements. Practical experience in dealing with business-level implications of developing and marketing financial products and services.
- Experience in compliance (e.g., KYC, UDAAP, privacy) and corporate governance matters, with demonstrated ability for understanding operational details of business systems and processes in depth. Experience in emerging payments a plus.
- General knowledge of intellectual property, privacy, and data protection laws.
- Ability to support identification and implementation of strategies for business process improvements, gain credibility, manage expectations, and develop strong working relationships with GCO colleagues and business clients; convey clear advice to clients and provide pro-active, creative, and business oriented solutions; prioritize tasks and manage multiple competing projects with tight deadlines; work well in cross-functional team settings; and manage ambiguity well.
- High energy, team-oriented, self-starter, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Strong work ethic and personal accountability.
- JD degree, New York Bar admission in good standing, and minimum five (5) years relevant legal experience.
