The Biologics Discovery Program Leader (BDPL) reports to the Head of Strategy, Operations and Program Management (SOPM) and works closely with the other BDPLs, Biologics Research Functional leaders and the therapeutic areas. The role of a Biologics Discovery Program Leader (BDPL) is to effectively co-lead, in close conjunction with TA representatives, biopharmaceutical drug discovery programs from the portfolio entry to NME (New Molecular Entity) declaration. The programs could be originated internally or be part of external collaborations, including the Innovation Centers and responsibilities could vary accordingly.

The responsibilities of the BDPL include providing scientific leadership of the direction of the program. More specifically, setting the program’s strategy and objectives to include determining critical path, identifying needs and negotiating for support resources. Work with other BDPL’s to coordinate resources across the portfolio of activities within Biologics Research. Attention should be given to streamlining program operations for faster and more efficient delivery of lead molecules and NMEs.

Additionally, the Leader will be responsible for reporting program progress in Biologics Research’s and Therapeutic Area’s portfolio review meetings, as well as presenting to senior leaders in decision-making meetings (deep-dives, stage-gate reviews, PDAC, NME declaration). The administrative responsibilities for the position include setting up and facilitating project meetings, taking accurate minutes, following up on action items, maintaining timelines, and managing internal and external collaboration sites. The BDPL will also be responsible preparing summary documents (e.g., TEAMMATE, etc), archiving team documents and ensure compliance with all required discovery guidelines. The BDPL also enables clear and effective communication of the Program strategy and objectives to Legal, External Collaborators, Finance and others, as appropriate. Depending on the origin of the programs the BDPL would lead he/she might interact with non-JNJ companies and collaborators representing Janssen’s interest and drive the program through the Discovery stage gates.

Qualifications


A minimum of a PhD and 10 years of experience in pharmaceutical drug discovery or development is required, of which minimum 5 years must be biologics related.

Experience in Drug Discovery is highly preferred.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required.

The ability to work with cross-functional teams in a matrix environment is required.

Demonstrated ability to resolve conflict and influence teams without formal authority is required.

Successful experience managing or leading global and/or virtual teams is highly preferred, especially if done within a matrix organization.

Professional project management certification is preferred.

Advanced SharePoint technical skill and working knowledge of Microsoft Project is preferred.
