Requirements:
  • PhD in Applied Mathematics or Computer Science
  • Experienced technical and project management professional with 5+ years hands-on academia, National Lab or industrial post-PhD technical experience in several of the areas of relevance: Scientific computing algorithms, operating systems, large-scale massively parallel computing, application programming, application performance analysis and tuning, AI and machine learning, signal and image processing, statistics and stochastic analysis
  • Have a substantial network and visibility within the Shell R&D community, or able to build that quickly. Scientific and professional recognition and profile outside Shell via papers, books, teaching, training, professional service, etc
  • Should be able to act effectively in building and maintaining relations with academic and private research institutes across the globe
  • Excellent communication and change management skills, both with senior management and local stakeholder teams
  • Proactive documentation and advanced reporting skills involving frequent internal and external publications and presentations are a must
  • Ability to coach and inspire others
Responsibilities:
  • Purpose: For the field of Applied Mathematics or Computer Science - To build capabilities and skills in the Shell Houston Computer Science R&D team of the Computational Technology platform
  • To seek out, evaluate, discover and invent emerging technologies which can solve targeted current or future problems in RDS businesses
  • To test ideas through the "fastest route to failure" and/or to champion and develop such technologies to the point of organizational commitment
  • Typically this will be to the point of investment in a funded project within the Shell Projects and Technology organization (P&T), but may also be direct sponsorship by the business or external development with third parties
  • The incumbent will have and maintain a broad and deep technical network with research institutes, academia and peers in RDS and other companies in order to be able to early recognize/test new ideas and approaches
  • The incumbent will also provide technical perspective for local and global management on mid and long term developments in technology in applied math and computer science and their impact on the valuation of business opportunities as input to technology and business strategy
  • Accountabilities: Leadership with respect to developing real technology options for medium and long-term technology opportunities in Scientific Computing, predominantly for geoscience applications
  • Quickly identifying key issues when assessing new technologies
  • Provide technical and project management leadership in a group of 10-12 computational scientists and engineers
  • Interact with other P&T and business stakeholders in global collaboration projects (Americas-Europe-Asia)
  • Assist with maintenance and management of a portfolio of internal and external projects on topics in research and technology that are sometimes outside the realm of existing Shell businesses or technology projects in order to rapidly and cost effectively assess their potential impact on Shell
  • Develop and execute cross business innovative R&D and technical service projects on behalf of and sponsored by the upstream and downstream P&T organization
  • Responsible for timeliness, quality and innovative content of work delivered to the customers
  • Identify the “80-20” solution
  • Ensure Shell’s IP position is secured and extended
