Job Description    Overall Responsibilities:

The incumbent is responsible for driving innovation for the Division and the broader organization by setting and executing against a divisional technology portfolio/strategy to drive incremental business value. With earlier starts to technology projects and with more strategic and concentrated efforts against them, technology will be ready to enable earlier launches with products that delight our users and are differentiated versus the competition.

Broad Accountabilities Include: Increasing External Commercialized Product Sales for the Division and Informing and Influencing the Organization on best practices and processes/tools associated with External Innovation (e.g. Deal Execution/Negotiation, External Technology Scouting, Technology Validation/Evaluations) for the Division.

The position has global responsibility and supports the strategic growth and innovation initiatives for their respective division and at times multiple divisions by leading technology acquisitions with cross-category applications. The incumbent is accountable for identifying, leading and championing external technology acquisitions and licensing which result in providing sustainable competitive advantage for SC Johnson: adding value to the company product portfolio by offering novel and protectable technologies to advance to development and ultimately to commercialization of new products ($50MM-$75MM in annual sales, plus cross-category initiatives of ~$75MM+).

This individual will have high visibility in a key position (External Outreach is one of the five pillars of the RD&E Identity) and will interact with senior management of the company: Division RD&E Director/VP, Division Business Vice President, and occasional engagement with the RD&E President & Chief Technical Officer. When leading and/or overseeing cross-category technology acquisition/licensing opportunities, interaction will also include working with other RD&E Division Heads and Division Business Vice Presidents.

Specific Responsibilities:

Deal Execution/Negotiation that is Linked to the Business Strategy:

Acquired external technologies that meet/surpass agreed to criteria to result in commercialized products with $25MM-$50MM, typically, in annual factory sales with cross-category initiatives at $75MM+. Goals: 1) at least two deals per year to cultivate a sustainable external technology pipeline for the division 2) at least one product successfully commercialized annually based on external technologies.

• Lead multi-functional negotiation teams, including Marketing, RD&E, Finance, Procurement/Product Supply and Legal, in contract negotiations for external products, technologies &/or capabilities. Agreements to include: Technology Licenses, Patent Purchases/Patent Licenses, Joint Development Agreements, Trade Secret Purchases, Exclusive Evaluation Options, and actively participate in Supply Agreement negotiations involving external technologies

• Coach junior TAN members on negotiations/deal closures


Technology Roadmapping:

Accountable for the division technology portfolio/strategy, communication, and execution: to include updating the roadmap annually with relevant new consumer and technology trends as well as trends related to regulatory requirements and competitive implications:

• Technology Roadmapping to clearly define Focus Areas (technology needs) that align with the division business strategy/Territories: leveraging a combination of consumer insights and technology innovation as a competitive differentiator

Technology Validation/Evaluations:

• Obtain the necessary resources/ skill sets (e.g. Scientists and Technicians, Designers, Design Research, Marketing, Finance and Legal) and dollars for effective evaluation of technologies for all relevant projects (including cross-divisional projects)

• Coach junior TAN members who have responsibility to work with sub-teams to coordinate and execute technology evaluations (up to 20 annually) to include assessing the technology against consumer, technical, IP protection, financial, and sustainability criteria

• Influence the Division/Divisions on which technologies to move forward: provide coaching to junior TAN members on documenting and communicating the technology’s application to the business, upcoming milestones and recommendations in a clear and concise fashion to facilitate decision making

Relationship Management:

• Internal: Build, maintain, cultivate, and leverage productive relationships with RD&E and Marketing Management including Business Heads, Business & Territory Directors, project teams, Legal and Finance to ensure and influence that technology capabilities/principles are applied in a way that maximizes benefit to the Company

• External: Develop, maintain, expand and leverage multiple relevant relationships within the External Innovation industry (e.g. with strategic technology partners, etc.) to enhance the Company’s ability to identify and capitalize on external technologies


Intellectual Property Portfolio Management:

• Accountable for strengthening the divisions overall position in intellectual property assets, strategically aligned with driving successful commercial offerings

Other responsibilities:

Lead TAN Division Steering Committee meetings:

• The focus of the meetings is against the divisional technology portfolio, external technology evaluation reviews and decision making (resources for evaluation and investments/negotiation terms) and prioritization

- Develop presentation materials and lead discussion to include options, recommendations, rationale and resources needed in a clear and concise fashion to facilitate decision making


Required Qualifications:

• Senior professional with proven experience in Research and Development(10+ years, as well as experience and aptitude for working with external partners (e.g. suppliers, consultants, engineering firms)

• Technical Competence: technical undergraduate degree required in Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or related field and a broad technical background with ability to quickly learn new technology areas

Desired Qualification:


• Strong business acumen: understands the roles of the business in meeting consumer needs; makes process and product technology recommendations that align with/enhance the business strategy

• Masters degree is highly desirable

• Proven leadership skills: able to interface effectively and manage relationships with Marketing, RD&E, Legal, Finance, Product Supply and at all levels of the organization

• Influence & Champion: Demonstrated ability to shape external technologies into business opportunities and “sell” external technology both internally and externally

• Provides Strategy and Direction: Motivates and guides others toward future achievements

• Demonstrated negotiating experience and aptitude with proven ability to negotiate agreements necessary to evaluate and acquire external technologies

• Demonstrated independent thinking/decision making and authority: makes recommendations based on analysis of complex data combined with varying perspectives

• Ability to create an environment of innovation and balanced risk taking

• Experience working with patents

• Comfortable working in high levels of ambiguity

• Possesses the highest level of ethics and integrity

• Willingness to travel
