The Position

Principal Finance Manager – Biologics External Manufacturing & Finance Business Operations

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Principal Finance Manager will lead a team providing financial management and oversight of global external manufacturing expenditure for the Biologics External Manufacturing (PTBX) business unit.  This position is located in South San Francisco and will report to the Senior Director for Biologics Finance.  The position is expected to have one direct report in US, and a dotted line report in Basel.
The PTBX organization is a dynamic, growing unit managing numerous relationships with external Biologics manufacturers around the world (Samsung, Lonza, DSM, Novartis, BI ..).  external Biologics manufacturers form an integral part of our global Biologics manufacturing network.  This role provides a unique opportunity to get exposure to the Biotech industry’s many facets.
The Principal Finance manager has responsibility for the Global month-end close process, Global Budget/Forecast/Actual financial reporting and presentations, and full financial stewardship of all PTBX functions. The position will also be expected to participate in the External Manufacturing contracting process, including site selection, due diligence and contract negotiations.
The Principal Finance manager is also expected to serve as business manager for Biologics Finance – providing business support services to the broader organization.  The position will manage, oversee, and coordinate various meetings, processes, and projects to ensure that Biologics Finance successfully delivers on its mission, goals, and strategy.  Once the operating model is established and well functioning, the Principal Finance manager, as well as other members of the leadership team, is expected to lead key initiatives across the organization to continuously improve our performance and service delivery.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead, manage and own the month-end close process, including overseeing the accruals, variance analysis, and account reconciliations process globally.
  • Responsible for consolidating and reporting monthly financial results for Global PTBX management reporting, including requirements to FP&A teams at Genentech and Basel
  • Responsible for consolidating Global PTBX financial budgets and forecasts, including development and maintenance of financial models, and prepare executive presentations
  • Act as lead financial support for the PTBX leadership team:  Including functional reporting, net expense reporting, support contract process (due diligence, RFP analysis and negotiation) and applicable make vs. buy projects
  • Oversees annual Standard Costing process as well as monthly production variance analysis
  • Work with PTBX staff located at the external manufacturing sites to resolve financial issues and offer financial input on operational site decisions.
  • Proactively supports building and maintaining effective business partnerships with the Pharma Technical Operations Finance organization. This role will require significant interface with other finance and planning groups across the organization 
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES AS CHIEF OF STAFF:
  • Drives operational delivery for Biologics Finance and manages the operational model for Biologics Finance LT
  • Develop knowledge sharing methodology for Biologics Finance
  • Coordinate and facilitate the annual Biologics Finance goals planning process, as well as the process for cascading annual goals and monitor¿quarterly progress
  • Provide communication strategies and vehicles to ensure, in a global environment, a collaborative spirit and sense of community;
  • Provide support for special projects including efficiency, strategic analysis, and organizational fitness activities and change management.
  • Must effectively manage and influence teams.

Who You Are

MAJOR SKILLS / TRAITS:
  • Strong communication and presentation skills and demonstrated success in building partnerships across organizational boundaries. Commitment to customer service with a strong sense of ownership for projects and results is a must.

  • Solid understanding of finance and accounting concepts, processes and systems
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a highly demanding and fast paced environment
  • Advanced technical finance and accounting knowledge with analytical expertise, business foresight, and problem-solving skills
  • Familiar with current accounting pronouncements, FGAR and their application; and good understanding of key cost drivers in external manufacturing environment
  • Excellent PC/system skills, including PowerPoint, Excel, Essbase, COGNOS and SAP.
  • A minimum of 8-10 years in finance, financial services and/or strategic advisory services, a minimum of 4 in a leadership role, preferably in a pharmaceutical or biologic manufacturing environment
