As a member of the Functional &
Structural Composites Lab, you will be responsible for initiating and
directing new areas of research and development in a broad range of
current and next-generation GE products, including new composite
materials for aviation and energy applications, high temperature resin
& fiber systems, and functional modifications of resin, fiber &
filler components.
Working independently and leading a multi-disciplinary team, you will:
Conduct basic and applied research towards the development of novel composite systems.
Identify key technical issues and focus resources to produce cutting edge technical breakthroughs.
Develop processes for transitioning new technologies from the laboratory to pilot scale fabrication.
Identify technology trends and develop technical roadmaps to address them.
Build internal and external relationships across a wide variety of technical expertise and business insight.
Prepare patent disclosures and work with legal counsel to prepare patent applications.
Investigate, identify and lead external opportunities for
funding and collaboration. Prepare research proposals for external
funding.
Deliver effective presentations, reports, and publications
to Global Research leadership, the GE businesses, government agencies,
professional societies, and peer-reviewed journals.
Doctorate
in Chemistry, Materials Science or a closely related discipline with at
least 7 years of post-graduate degree experience in the field of
structural composites.
Demonstrated working knowledge & recognized expert in composite materials – structure – property relationships.
In depth knowledge of composite industry.
Demonstrated excellence in project execution.
Proven record of innovation in areas related to composite materials technology.
Experience in securing & executing Government funded projects in the composite area.
Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We
will not sponsor individuals at the Masters level for employment visas,
now or in the future, for this job opening.
Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
Must be willing to take a drug test and submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process.

Organic, inorganic, polymer chemistry, or materials science
Experience in design through manufacturing of composite components (fiber, matrix, and fillers)
Composite fabrication methods
Industrial experience in some aspect of composite technology
Fully versed in composite characterization methods
Design and synthesis of new composite materials
High temperature composite materials
Organic/inorganic fiber chemistry or modification
External publications/presentations in composite area
Generating external funding in composites area or support of external contracts
Demonstrated leadership experience.
Demonstrated creative problem solving skills using innovative solutions.
Demonstrated capability to guide & influence other scientists and engineers from disciplines different than own.
