Description
The
Information Systems Engineer on the LAN team is responsible for all
aspects of the wired and wireless networks on the SAS Cary campus. The
team is responsible for networking within SAS data centers, campus
office buildings and customer hosting environments. The engineer assumes
project management and technical responsibility for projects within
their functional area. Team is responsible for the routing, switching,
load balancing and security functions within the network. The engineer
performs long-range planning for associated networks, provides
documentation, training, and follows change management procedures of
SAS.
Major Responsibilities:
- Assists with the planning, design, setup, and troubleshooting of such items as local area networks (LANs), network routing protocols, Wireless networks (Wi-Fi) and Storage area networks (SANs).
- Performs capacity planning, forecasting/trending, hardware configuration and installation of such items as routers, switches, firewalls, load balancing equipment, and wireless controllers.
- Researches, evaluates, performs cost analysis and writes business justification for purchasing new technologies. Assists in vendor selection as part of this process.
- Produces and maintains current documentation for areas of responsibility.
- Participates in 24x7 oncall rotation for critical networks.
- Participates in maintenance windows one Saturday per month.
- Interacts with customers to develop requirements and initiate and/or implement technology solutions to meet customer requirements.
- Maintains an awareness of and researches new technologies as they relate to the delivery of communication services.
Qualifications
Essential
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or other quantitative degree
- 5 years experience programming, administering and engineering Cisco networking environments
- 5 years experience with TCP/IP and WAN/LAN networking
- Experience with designing highly available data center networks
- Experience designing, developing and implementing software projects, with proficiency in at least one programming language
Equivalent Essential
- Associates degree in the same fields plus 7 years of stated essential qualifications ~ OR ~
- High school diploma (GED) plus 9 years of stated essential qualifications
Additional
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and deliver on multiple projects simultaneously
- Self-motivated and customer service focused
- Good technical understanding of TCP/IP and general networking
- Excellent facilitation skills, including meeting content/agenda and proactive/creative management of issues
- Ability to manage projects and interface with employees of varying skill sets in a high-pressure environment
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills; strong problem solving skills
Preferences
- Experience with networking for virtualized server environments
- Experience with Cisco Catalyst switches
- Experience with Cisco Nexus switch platforms
- Experience with controller based wireless networks
- Experience with Juniper EX switch platforms
- Knowledge of EIGRP, BGP, vPC, FabricPath, FCoE and/or iSCSI protocols
- Experience with automation for network management and deployment
- Experience with public cloud providers and public/private cloud integration
- Experience with Web Services, SOAP, REST, XML over HTTP, etc.
- Experience with Oracle or MySQL
