In
the Marketing Group at Microsoft, we are using big data to make big
decisions about how, where, and to whom to promote Microsoft devices and
services, deeply understand our customers, and take some of the most
exciting new technology in a generation to the marketplace.
In the Marketing Sciences team, we will be building real time analytics to inform Microsoft executives and marketing leaders on how our products and those of our competitors are performing in the market, and how consumers are engaging with Microsoft products. We will be applying the latest petabyte-scale data processing capabilities (built by some of the best computing research and engineers on the planet!), business experience and acumen, decision science, and old fashioned common sense to advise strategic decision makers in marketing, advertising and market strategy. The successful candidate will have a track record of being a “jack of all trades” data expert, the one management always seems to go to because they either know the numbers or because they: a) produce the reports or manage the people who produce the reports b) know where to go or who to ask c) can think on their feet to combine data sources to triangulate on an answer d) will organize and lead a development project to get the answers if it’s very important The person in this role will be required to help decision-makers shift from ad hoc analysis to an ongoing conversation with data. As this team makes new discoveries, we are required to communicate what we’ve learned and suggest its implications for new business directions. And, while data manipulation and analytics skills are important, in this role the ability to be creative in displaying information visually and making the patterns we find clear and compelling is even more important. Harvard Business Review defined this role well as a “hybrid of data hacker, analyst, communicator, and trusted adviser. The combination is extremely powerful—and rare.” As this is a senior role, in addition to the requisite technical skills, the successful candidate will demonstrate leadership qualities that will enable him or her to manage and influence others over whom no direct authority is given. He or she will play a critical role in shaping and providing governance for the technology platforms that enable the required analytic and research capabilities. Required Education and Experience: - Bachelor’s Degree in a quantitative discipline (mathematics, computer science, economics, etc.) - Master’s Degree or higher in computer science, statistics, economics, information systems or other technically relevant field - 5-10 years’ experience in analytics, decision sciences, data warehousing, business intelligence - Minimum 5 years supporting business management & executive leadership with data, reporting, or quantitative research Technical Skills and Expertise: - Expert in T-SQL, MDX, Hadoop, R or other widely-adopted programming languages and tools to process, aggregate, and apply analytic techniques to process and visualize large datasets - Experience applying statistical techniques for understanding time series data, regression analysis, hypothesis testing, and experiment design. At a minimum familiarity if not direct experience with common machine learning techniques such as SVM, neural networks, etc. - Knowledge and experience in systems analysis, data processing architectures and track record of sniffing out data anomalies & resolving the most important data quality issues Preferred Skills and Experience: - 3+ years demonstrated experience leading or program managing engineering teams to develop solutions for processing or performing computations on large datasets - 3+ years Hands on experience with Microsoft business intelligence tools including SQL Server, Power Pivot/Power View, or other similar business intelligence or statistical tools such as R & SAS - Experience with geospatial analysis & visualization of data - Experience in digital marketing, advertising, web analytics, or other consumer media strongly preferred MBD&E COHYREQ 854057 |
