Job description
IBM's SoftLayer public cloud customer enablement team is looking for an experienced technical engineer and hands-on architect to be part of customer proof-of-concepts team, that show cases how the services can meet customer’s public cloud requirements.

IBM’s public cloud infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offering is based on IBM SoftLayer technology and provides a self-service secure and scalable hosted IT infrastructure with on-demand access to virtual and bare-metal servers, storage and network resources with a usage based payment model.

You will apply your broad cloud knowledge and hands-on SoftLayer subject matter expertise, across the entire platform: from IaaS, PaaS, all the way to SaaS offerings, to define and architect cloud based solutions that meets PoC requirements and schedules. As the customer's technical focal point for all SoftLayer services, you will help educate them about the features and functions, and architect a strategy to migrate their workloads to IBM's public cloud platform.

Core Responsibilities
As a technical engineer within the Customer Enablement team, you will:
  • Be a subject matter expert in IaaS concepts and solutions
  • Have hands-on expertise in using the SoftLayer services across the entire platform: compute, networking, storage, middleware and application services
  • Conduct presentations and demos highlighting the features and functions of SoftLayer platform at customer briefings and industry events
  • Lead technical teams to conduct PoCs with customers to show them SoftLayer platform services can indeed meet their public cloud requirements
  • Own the architecture, design, and implementation of the solutions that will meet the PoC requirements
  • Author and also assist in creating enablement instructional and information content highlighting how to use the SoftLayer services
  • Build sample applications and prototypes that showcases how specific features within the SoftLayer platform can be used
  • Be the technical focal point in the PoC team and will interact with customer PoC technical team members
  • Work with team members across multiple time zones
  • Collaborate with marketing teams to evangelize IBM SoftLayer offering capabilities on social media sites

    Needed skills:
  • 3+ years experience as Leading customer engagements
  • 3+ years experience in Technical lead roles architecting software solutions
  • 2+ years experience in Cloud related projects
  • 1+ years experience in Linux system administration including networking and storage
  • 6+ months experience and hands-on knowledge of administering x86 virtualization technologies with VMware and KVM
  • 6+ months experience in automating software installations

    Desired Qualifications:
  • Someone with experience writing code and building prototypes, demos and applications
  • Development skills in one or more languages: Java, PHP, Ruby, Python
  • Hands-on knowledge of OpenStack and KVM – strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of SoftLayer platform
  • Linux system administration: Redhat, SuSE, Ubuntu
  • Good knowledge and awareness of capabilities of at least one public cloud: Amazon, Microsoft, Rackspace
  • Knowledge of automation frameworks: Chef, Puppet
  • Knowledge of open source cloud-native technologies such as - Apache Cassandra, Cordova. NoSQL, Hadoop
  • Knowledge of installing middleware softwares like: SpringSource, CloudFoundry

    Nice to have:
  • Knowledge of Hadoop MapReduce, Cloudera
  • Skills in mobile application development: HTML5, Apache Cordova, iOS, Android
  • Windows administration and automation skills

    While this job can be done from any city, the preferred location is San Jose, CA.
  • Required
    • Bachelor's Degree
    • At least 5 years experience in Software industry
    • At least 2 years experience in Software development roles in the area of web applications
    • Readiness to travel 50% travel annually
    • English: Fluent
    Preferred
    • Master's Degree in Information Technology
