As a Materials Scientist, you will develop X-ray analysis methodology for a diverse range of GE materials and deliver high quality results to contribute to problem solving across various GE businesses.p>
As part of the Chemical and Structural Analysis Lab, you will work with GE Global Research and GE business technology teams to design and execute research projects using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and other X-ray and Neutron methods for structure analysis of GE materials system. Project scope includes but is not limited to new product development, fundamental research, quality control method development, and failure root cause analysis.p>

You will:
  • Deliver qualitative and quantitative phase characterization and structure analysis solution for a wide range of GE materials through both in-house XRD capability and synchrotron/neutron based methods and communicate results clearly to project teams and GE businesses through presentation and written reports.
  • Collaborate with national labs user facilities such as NSLS and APS, develop and/or implement advanced X-ray or neutron based methods that accelerate material discoveries at GE.
  • Participate in research programs at GE Global Research that require XRD characterization expertise.
  • Collaborate with a wide variety of other researchers at GE Global Research and within GE businesses and provide consultation, experimental results, and analysis associated with these investigations.
  • Generate new ideas for developing programs that apply analytical methodology to meet business needs
  • Present research in technical conferences and actively participate in the X-ray community representing GE
  • Doctorate degree in Material Science, Chemistry, or related Chemical and Physical Science disciplines with at least 2 years of post-degree research experience OR Master degree in Material Science, Chemistry, or related disciplines with at least 5 years of post-degree research experience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in bulk and/or thin film X-ray diffraction methods such as phase ID, quantitative phase analysis, precise lattice parameter measurements, crystallite size analysis, GIXRD, pole figure, residual stress analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with Synchrotron/Neutron methods.
  • Demonstrated instrumentation skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Must be willing to travel to Synchrotron and Neutron source facilities to perform experiments as needed.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

  • Industrial Research Experience
  • Experience in building custom X-ray instruments and carrying out non-traditional experiments.
  • Experience with a variety of different material systems.
  • Experience in other X-ray techniques such as SAXS and PDF.
  • Experience in other characterization techniques such as Micro-CT, XRF, SEM, TEM, etc.
  • Familiarity with Linux operating system and proficient in Matlab and SPEC
  • Familiarity with programs such as GSAS, Jade, High Score Plus
  • Working knowledge of statistics and chemometrics.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership capabilities with excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
