The Lead Combustor Thermal Design Engineer will demonstrate accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives. This individual will lead design effort for combustor thermal design programs and ensure combustor products meet thermal design requirements throughout conceptual, preliminary and detailed design phases, through the use of component test data and CFD / heat transfer analytical methods.
The SAC / M&I Combustor Thermal Design within the Thermal Systems Design section in Engineering Technologies will be responsible for the cooling design and analysis of GE’s flagship Single Annular Combustor (SAC) and Marine & Industrial (M&I) Combustors. In this role, you will be leading the development, test, certification, manufacturing support, field support and services support of Evendale and Lynn products. These efforts are supported by a global team of engineers from the US, Poland and Turkey.
In addition, you will:
  • Coordinate with aero and mechanical teams to integrate system level requirements
  • Verify, validate and certify designs through component and engine test, participate as a presenter in technical and program reviews, and interface with chief consulting engineers, the engine systems organization and senior leadership
  • Lead teams assigned to address organizational initiatives, identify and participate in analytical method development projects, contribute to Design Practice procedures and requirements, and participate as a presenter at the Design Board
  • Execute the analysis / evaluation of assigned projects that meet business standards, practices and procedures and the product / program requirements
  • Recommend approach to meet the technical and program requirements
  • Formulate and implement plans to achieve technical requirements, schedules and contract commitments
  • Provide technical guidance to other personnel and assigned teams; mentor others in the organization
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures
  • Monitor and communicate project status, business issues and significant developments
  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews
  • Plan and execute component and engine test programs and utilize the results to validate engine designs, systems and analytical models
  • Master’s Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical and/or Nuclear Engineering form an accredited college or university (or Bachelor’s Degree with minimum 7 years of professional work experience)
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional work experience

  • PhD in Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical and/or Nuclear Engineering
  • Ability to self-manage workload
  • Lead small technical teams in the execution of assigned projects within a specified scope, schedule, and budget
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to adapt style and content to detailed technical settings as well as senior leadership reviews
  • Experience in interfacing with a number of engineering organizations outside of own team
  • Lead efforts to address technical challenges and identifying and capitalizing on opportunities to improve the state of the art
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines
  • Ability to anticipate needs of the business or technical requirements based upon experience
  • Ability to balance tactical and strategic engineering efforts seamlessly
  • Experience with gas turbine heat transfer and fluid systems analysis associated with hot section (combustor, turbine or fuel injector) hardware components
  • Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) experience in performing cooling design
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) experience in performing cooling design
  • Experience with gas turbine hot section hardware design including a strong understanding of conventional and advanced materials capabilities
  • Working knowledge of engine thermodynamic cycle and unique issues presented throughout typical engine operating regimes
  • Advanced knowledge of Convective and Radiation Heat Transfer
  • Advanced knowledge of Compressible and Turbulent flow fields
  • Knowledge of System Modeling
